Organogram or Organizational Structure

An organogram, also called as organizational chart or org-chart, is the internal structure of an organization that tells about its different levels and elements with which it is composed of. Flat or Horizontal:

Horizontal type of organograms are mostly used by the small or newly started organizations. These organizations do not have reporting relationships, only assigned goals are supposed to be achieved. Organizations when grow larger then sometime they may adopt different organizational structure. It cannot be possibly of any use for larger organizations with multilayer managements and projects. It generally has only two levels. The top authority and the lower workforce. There higher authority is at the top while the lateral relationships are shown by connecting with lines showing all of them at the same level. It cuts down all the layers of management thus there is a close relationship between the top authority and the lower workforce.

Such organograms show employees independence in taking decisions as it eliminates all the underlying managements. No employee in the organization have superiority over the other. All workers have same level of responsibilities. Advantages and Disadvantages:

Matrix:

Matrix structures are quite differently used as compared to the hierarchical and horizontal type of structures. It has a grid like structure in which there are different teams that are expected to perform different functions and produce difference end products. Each team is given a specific task to accomplish. However, there is a multi-layered management on the work force. For example: In a textile mill, all engineers are bound to report the textile engineering manager. Apart from that under each specific project they have to report to that project manager also. The textile engineering manager is accountable to engineering head. So most of the employees report to a minimum of two managers.

Therefore, unlike hierarchical and horizontal type of structures, matrix structures are specially designed for organizations where there are both specialized roles assigned to individual teams of organization but also they have reporting connection with higher authorities.

Advantages and Disadvantages:

2. Organizational charts only cover the formal communication channels while mostly ignore the informal channels. They are not supposed to be included in an organogram but their absence might bring its disadvantages such as ineffective communication. In large organizations, such as multinational companies, org-charts become very huge and complicated. To avoid any mistake and difficulty in such cases, the departments, projects, sites and regions etc of the organization can be split into smaller charts.
